Life in Vancouver: Grocery shopping and Indian products

Vancouver and it's nearby areas have quite a good amount of Indian population. This makes us Indians a good market and all big grocery stores have Indian products in their shelf. You can go to a Walmart or Real Canadian Superstore or Safeway, each of them will have basic Indian staples. I am staying near Coquitlam/Burnaby so Walmart is nearest to me and next is Real Canadian Superstore which has everything from Rice to Atta to Besan to Toor daal to Mustard oils and Haldiram products and many of Indian spices.

One thing I observed that same product will have different price at different shops. So check the price online and go to store which is nearer and having better price. I use an online grocery delivery app called Instakart which shows products and their cost in respective store. Also you can download Walmart and Real Canadian Superstore and Safeway apps.

While generic vegetables like potatoes, onions, tomatoes, cauliflower, carrot, Cilantro, chilli, bell peppers, spinach and fruits like banana, apple orange etc you can get on any shop. Some specific Indian vegetables like Lauki, Bhindi, Baingan, Methi, Kaddu, Tinde and fruits like mango, guava etc you will find in Indian stores.

Indian stores prices for vegetables are cheaper than Big shopping giants. But grocery product are cheaper in Shopping malls, may be they can buy in bulk. But still Indian stores have more variety of stuff like different kind of daal(lentils) spices, papads, achhar, pre mix stuff and sweets.

In my local neighborhood, Fruticana and Sabzimandi have better collection and good rates. But if you can drive to Surrey, you can get more options and cheaper rates since there is a bigger Indian community living in Surrey and nearby.

Costco is also a good place to buy rice and vegetables. Check if something which you like and want to buy in volume, like Rice, Toiletries, Oil, ghee, butter, vegetables, washing detergent, dishwasher detergent, toilet cleaning products and tissues etc. No one can beat Costco pricing and quality, only catch is that you have to buy 6 months supply. Costco is a wholesale shop.

Look for some small Indian or Pakistani or Srilankan shop nearby for emergency shopping of Indian spices or stuff. They may be costly than Big Indian shops but comes handy when you don't wanna drive long.

Also look for dollar tree or Dollarama, they have products in range of 1-2 CAD. They are not great quality products but still useful for school crafts, decorations, not so critical items.

Life in Vancouver: Medical Emergency

So this was something which I was not waiting for but had done some preparation. Ofcourse you should be coming with a travel insurance as you enter Canada, preferably 100000 CAD or above. Then till the time you get enrolled to Medical Support Program (MSP) which is 3 Months from date of entry, you should either have an employer provided insurance or self provided. Once you have applied for MSP ok online, you will get a PHN Public Health Number which you can use to access Canada Free Health System.

I got the taste of this when my wife developed some complications and she needed to see a doctor. Ideal case you should be registered with a Family doctor whom you can contact in such cases. But due to lack of enough doctors, waiting period to get a Family doctor is long and we didn't have a family doctor. I checked if some online tele consultation can happen and called 811, which is medical care number, just like 911 which is for fatal emergencies ( you should dial 911 for life threatening issues which need immediate care).

Once you dial 811, a operator will take your details like PHN,  name, Date of birth, address and basic issue and then will put you on hold to connect to a nurse. It took my 20 min on hold to talk to a nurse. She listened to the issue and then suggested to visit emergency response (ER) to a nearby hospital. There are urgent and primary care centers and Babylon by Telus which both provide, tele doctor consultation. If doctors are convinced they can give you a prescription on email or send directly to nearby pharmacy where you can visit and collect your medication telling your PHN no and showing ID card.

Tele consultation

On this website you can book a doctor who will call you back and can prescribe medication and send to your preferred pharmacy from where you can pick up your medicines. I have personally tried Dr Chakera who did this for me.

Vivacare.ca : I have not tried but have seen their clinic near Walmart Lougheed Station.

For us, tele consultation didn't work so we visited Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster. There is a website http://www.edwaittimes.ca/WaitTimes.aspx which shows all hospitals and ER waiting time. You can choose your hospital based on distance and wait time.

Once you are at hospital, you need to meet registration desk, enroll yourself showing/telling your PHN no. In case you don't have PHN, there are charges. For Canada Residents (Temporary work Force or PR or citizen) it's 361 CAD and for non Canada residents (visitor visa) it's 1275 CAD just to register yourself. That will include basic check up etc. There will be separate charges for procedures and tests. If you are enrolled in MSP and have PHN, no charges. But irrespective of your insurance status, hospital will register you and treat you. They will put a wrist band which will have a patient number and details. There is a parking in basement of hospital which charges 4 CAD per hour or 12 CAD for 6 hours.

Now you have to wait for doctor to be available and attend you. It may take hours based on how busy it is. Assume it will be 2-3 hours and come prepared with mobile charger, some food or drinks. There may or may not be shops nearby. We reached in parking at 4:00 PM and we were able to see doctor by 8:50 PM. The medical system is free but it's quite delayed.

The doctor took their own sweet time diagnosing and suggesting medication and tests. He seemed apologetic for delays as it was a Sunday evening and Thanksgiving Eve. He gave us few medicine and a prescription which I can show to any pharmacy and take medicine from there (free of cost but 5 CAD per medicine service charge).

We started from home around 3:30 PM and we're back at 11:00 PM, exhausted and hungry. So moral of story, try to go on weekdays and morning slots. Take food and power bank/charging cable with you. Seats are comfortable.

Buying medicine is easy, you can go to any nearby pharmacy, I went to Walmart pharmacy. Gave him prescription and he took 20-25 minutes to prepare medicine for me. Saw my photo id and charged 5 CAD per medicine. I have two medicines, one of them 30 tab and other 10 tab, bill was 10 CAD. Dr also suggested some ultrasound which he referred me in system. Someone will call me to set an appointment and then I have to follow up with ER or some walkin clinic to show my reports.

How to be Happy??

1. You Must Accept Imperfection and Flaws

The point of life is progress and not perfection

2. You Must Take Responsibility For Your Problems

You can only fix your own imperfections and not the imperfections of others. So you may as well get to work on them.

3. You Must Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway

Bravery is not the absence of fear. Bravery is feeling the fear, the doubt, the insecurity, and deciding that something else is more important

 4. You Must Find a Deeper Purpose to Your Actions

You must choose what is motivating you. Is it something superficial and external or something deeper and more meaningful?

5. You Must Be Willing to Fail and Be Embarrassed

You cannot be a powerful life-changing presence to some people without being a complete joke and embarrassment to others

Relationship

Relationship (the ones we make consciously) , I feel, is quite similar to this graph depicting the life cycle of a product.

The initial phase of introduction and knowing each other is a bit slow... Trust takes time to build afterall... The growth phase depicts the level of attraction between 2 individuals... High, intense, secluded from future... Both the individuals put in their best efforts to keep each other happy in every manner... Now comes a point when they become the apple of each other's eyes and cannot think of anyone else apart from their beloved... The peak of attraction aka love... Soon, things change. We get so engrossed in our daily lives to gather the basic amenities for living, that there comes a situation when innovation and Improvements are ignored... Partly because individuals think that the other person loves him / her too much to leave and partly because he / she is unable to live upto the expectations of each individual dependant on him / her. As a result, quite unconsciously, they start taking each other for granted. That's where the decline starts.

So follow what these big business men and corporates do... Innovate, improve, train and adapt.

SOCIAL EXCHANGE THEORY

Stability of all relationships are the result of each individual making decisions about the following:

The ratio of costs to benefits - the balance of what we put into the relationship vs. what we received from it.

The satisfaction level - how the relationship compares to our expectations of what we each think we should have.

The dependence level - our chances of having a better relationship with a different person.

So, we form relationships with people who give as much to us as we give to them (ratio), treat us in accordance with our expectations (satisfaction), and are our best alternatives at the time and place (dependence). But, others are making the same calculations about us back. So, their ratios, satisfaction, and dependence influence whether a relationship happens too.

P-N Junction Diode Vs Marriages

A little bit of explanation of a term going to be used in the article many times before I start it.
P-N Junction diode is a electronic device used in many applications including mobile charger, cord less phones, TV etc.  This piece of writing is related to this P-N junction diode. I read somewhere that laws of Physics also termed as Laws of Nature. After spending so many years in Electronic Industry(for those who don't know, Electronics is a branch of Applied Physics) I can relate some behavior and properties of materials with human beings. The comparison is sought between P-N junction Diode and Marriages.

A P-N junction Diode is made by bringing a P-Type element and N-Type element together and making a junction out of it. A marriage is made by bringing a female and male together and making a union out of them. P-type element are essentially pure silicon with some added elements. Due to effect of these elements(impurity), P-Type element are very receptive towards electron. N-Type material are also pure silicon diffused with some excess electron elements.

Males are essentially creation of God with some impurities. They are also very attracted towards opposite sex. Females also have that extra amount of sensitivity, emotional etc. Both are imperfect and both want an opposite to compensate their impurities.

Now when P and N type materials are brought near to each other, some electrons(negative charge particles present in N Type devices) cross the junction and occupy empty spaces in P type devices. This is called depletion layer.

When a woman meets a man, all the worries and emotional baggage is transferred to man. Effectively after transferring so many things, woman becomes neutral and contended. Men who always wished to have some one to take care, initially seem happy and contended as the HOLES are filled.

When a P type material makes a junction with N type, some area near junction is formed where there exist no free place or free electron. As free electron is required for current flow, this area becomes barrier for more flow of electrons. This is called junction barrier. In Applied electronics, to use this junction diode, one need to apply a potential difference across P-N junction. If potential of P type is more than N type, a current flow across the junction. This situation is called Forward Bias. If potential of N type is larger than P type, called Reversed Bias(in most of applications, Diodes operate in Reverse Bias) , more and more electrons from N type enter P type and make this junction barrier thicker and thicker. This will further act as blockage to electron movement and no current flows across junction.

So what is this potential (Voltage) Difference or "Biasing" equates to real life? Is it love or money or Control???

My Bangalore Experience

Since last 2 years, I moved to Bangalore. So now sharing my experiences with you in & about Bangalore.

Bangalore is almost half in size of Delhi with no satellite towns as of now. The population of Bangalore is now almost 10 million (almost 2/3 of Delhi population). So its densely and un-evenly populated. Infrastructure is still developing so you will miss some wide 6 lane roads here if you are coming from Delhi. Still people are well cultured and they follow traffic rules and etiquette. It rains a lot here so during monsoons, traffic crawls specially near underpasses where it takes some time to clear the water clogging. So advisable is to stay close to workplace.

I am staying in east Bangalore near Marathalli and would share some things which normally people look for in this area.

Daily vegetables : No street shop probably due to rains. So you will find fixed shops selling vegetables in your area. Also vegetable are cheaper in Malls if you can shop for 1 week.
Near Marathalli, there is a Vegetable market(Google Map Link), which reminds me of Harola(Noida) though not as big. Its near Marathalli Bus Stop, just opposite to Ganesh Temple.

Fish Mandi : If you can travel a bit far, HAL Subji mandi(Google Map Link) is a bigger one. Here you also get variety of Fish (specially Bong people love this area). Make sure to reach upto 10:00 AM in morning to get good catches.

Chicken Shops : They are distributes around the city and no need to go to special shop.

Mutton Shop : Mutton is scares in Bangalore. People eat sheep not goat. I found 1 in K R Puram though my family didnt like that. Its infront of K R Puram Railway station (Google Map Link) though my advice, eat chicken. One another shop I found in Kundanhalli is New Frostys. It has goat mutton.

Pooja Items: Again, Marathalli Bus stand has many shops selling pooja items. They are adjacent to Ganesha Temple (Google Map Link), Also on the same street, you will find Mehndi walas sitting on special occasions like teej, karwa chauth. Another area to look for is New Thippasandra (Google Map Link).

Doctors: My experience in Bangalore with Doctors is not that great. Biggest hospital in east Bangalore is Manipal, which is private, but the services are like semi-private. Almost all Big doctors visit this hospital. This is very crowded and dr appointment are hard to get. Appolo and Fortis have opened their clinics in Kundanhalli Gate & Marathalli respectively. (You can search for the same in Google). I prefer Appolo over Fortis as their staff is better. For diagnostic, recently opened Yashomati Hospital in Marathalli is good option. For Kids, I found Dr Narmada Devi good.(http://www.littleangelsclinic.com/). I am seeing her for my 3 yr old son. She avoids Anti Biotic and over all good doctor.

Food: Now comes my favorite part. Being a foody, that too outside food.

Free Internet in Grenoble

This is specifically for STMicroelectronics Employees who are visiting Grenoble officially. ST prefers to arrange their accomodation in City Suits Hotel. There is a facility for ST Employees by City Suits free of cost. You can avail free internet access in your rooms. You just have to ask reception to handover you a DSL Modem along with its wires etc. You connect the DSL in your phone line in your room with splitter and LAN cable. Now you can be online as long as you want.
The only thing is that internet is wired and in small rooms of City Suits, its like you are trapped in some wires. So enjoy it on ur laptops...

MoneySaver : It really saves money....

First of all, let me clarify. They are not paying me anything for writing this. I am writing this because these are things which matters.

So friends! I came across this wonderful concept named MONEYSAVER. One fine day, we were planning to go to Adventure Island, Rohini. I called up the office and asked about the ticket which was Rs 375/- per person. Then I asked if they have any discount as we were 6 people. They said they have tie up with MONEYSAVER and if you are moneysaver member, we offer 1 ticket free with 1 ticket for One MoneySaver Card. I asked, "What the hell is MONEYSAVER? How do you become member?".

MoneySaver is a site with www.moneysaver.in. They have some membership coupons in denomination 99, 199 and 349 with validity 1 month, 3 month and 6 month. Once you have a membership card(can be purchased online or from THE MOBILE STORE), you can avail all offers provided to moneysaver members. So if I was a moneysaver member, I would have paid 375 + 99 for 2 Tickets of Adventure Island instead of 375x2. They also offer other discounts on food chains, shopping etc. For further details, check their web link www.moneysaver.in.

PS: If you buy their coupon online, it takes 24 hours to get activated. So if you planning to use it same day, buy it from MOBILE STORE chain.

The Pink Chadhdhi Campaign

Two weeks back, a shameful thing happened in the name of our culture and moral values. Some "unknown" political outfittried to get a negative publicity by beating women, who can be our sisters, fiancees, wives, friends any one. And therewas no one to check them. I feel outraged and many of us have felt it. But can we do something about it?? Can we teachthose notorious criminals and hooligans some lesson..??

Yes..See the attached link..A nice way to slap them and shut their mouth. If you feel the same be a part of it.

And now in the name of Maharashtra and Hinduism

Politics and religion, both were invented to teach a civil society some rules and control the animal instinct of human being. Now it seems both are trying to bring out that animal instinct. Last month it was so called "Jihad" terrorism. Now its Raj Thakre "Marathi" terrorism. http://www.bbc.co.uk/hindi/regionalnews/story/2008/03/080306_kishan_hands.shtml. Follow the link. MNS activist in Pune, chopped off hands of a street vendor selling roasted grams. And again it was poor man who was victimized. These bastard politicians, they can go up to any lowest level to get votes. Whatever happened 2 days back when MNS activist charged lathis on Railway recruitment examinees in Mumbai is a sheer example of another form of terrorism. This time its regional terrorism. Something like what happened in ASSAM by ULFA or by terrorist in Hindu villages in Kashmir. When ULFA and Laskare Taiyba is considered a terrorist organization then why not MNS should be banned? Why Maharashtra govt is doing so much thinking in doing this? The courts, High Court of Maharashtra or Supreme Court, cant they take suo moto cognizance and put a ban on this organization. For the sake of someone political goals, common man whether he is from UP or Bihar or Maharashtra can be tortured like this. We have to stand for it. Government and Judiciary are selected and appointed for taking care of such problems only. We pay our hard earned Tax money so that we can sleep tight without any fear. I put this question on PM email also and request Mr Prime Minister to look in this at personal level. Being a Congress Govt in Maharashtra, he should have direct control on this.
The same story is repeated in Orrissa and Karnataka. Few terrorist organizations like Bajrang Dal and VHP, are killing innocent people. They are worse than those who put bombs in busy streets. Atleast these terrorist dont see who got hurt. Here these so called Hindu terrorist rape young kids and nuns and burn them alive. They are worst psychopaths who enjoys pain and torture. They are like mad dogs who must be killed for smooth functioning of society. I pledge all my friends and fellow citizen to condemn these atrocities anywhere happening and be vocal about them. Hate those who support them. Spread awareness because these few leaders run there rein of fear based on fear psychology of common man. Once they know that people dont fear them and hate them, it will stop.

Free Heart Surgery for children

Why in the name of Allah?

Last Saturday, it was Delhi's turn. We all witnessed an act of shear frustration and coward ness. And that too in the name of "Almighty God". As the e-mail sent to various news channels suggest. These so called "Jihad's" or warriors for religion profess themselves as real Muslims and they attack Delhi because its capital of a "Hindutva" country India. All Delhites, specially people living in Karol Bagh and CP and GK, belong to VHP and Bajrang dal and these Freedom fighters wanted to take revenge from them.

Now coming to the victims. A family of poor people from Haryana, lost all their bread winners. These poor people were selling old cloths used for cleaning engines in Auto Market in Karol bagh. Another poor guy, who was studying Chartered Accountant, from remote city in UP. He lost his one eye. Another poor rickshaw puller Kasim and Farooq, both lost their lives. He has left Kashmir, because of the violence to live(or die) peacefully in Delhi.

I ask this question to all the Jihads and people having sympathy to their cause. What these innocent people has done to them or their religion. None of them have ant relation to VHP or Bajrang Dal. All of them were serving all religions with equal pride and affection. Then why they?

Just because they are easy prays. These cowards jihads, who boast themselves in name of Allah, don't have even that much guts to face the real culprits. I would have no complaints if they have targeted Narendra Modi or Pravin Togadia or Babu Bajrangi. But these so called jihads are such kind of criminals, I don't know how they face themselves in mirror leave aside facing Allah. Its something like, some Pehalwan hit you hard. You were helpless. Out of sheer frustration, you get hold of next weak person and start getting your frustration out on him. And over that claim that you doing it for religion and Allah. Will Allah boast such acts of cowardice. Even in Koran, which came on earth in this holy month of Ramdhan, its strictly mentioned, Don't kill children and women. Fight when you are attacked.

If these so called Jihads or Indian Mujahidins, for me they are un-organized criminals who are psychologically disturbed. They have some grudges and frustrations and they are taking it out by planting bombs on innocent people, places sneakily. Warriors don't act in hideouts or nights. They have guts to challenge enemy and face them. I spit on the face of these worms, cynical people, someone like that psycho killer who kills innocent people in darkness of night, without any fault of victims. He kills just because he is mentally sick. He enjoys it.

I request all of my friends, enemies, family, non family to take good care of themselves. Keep an open eye and foil any bid by such criminals to disturb peace of our country. For such un-organized criminals, police cant reach everywhere. Its we as citizens has to help ourselves.

A "cheap" alternative to AUTO in Delhi

As Delhi is progressing and we are seeing new means of transportation joining day by day. Started with radio Taxis, then low floor buses and now A/C low floor buses. Still Radio Taxis are in great demand as they give you safe medium of commutation, though at a higher cost. Today I saw a new Radio Taxi, Quick Cab. They are charging half the rate i.e 7.5 Rs/ KM whereas normal Radio taxi charges 15 Rs/KM. I called them up to confirm and they told me that at the moment they operate only in Delhi, No Noida/Ghaziabad ;-(. There are no hidden charges, 7.5 Rs/Km flat with 50 Rs/Hr waiting charges. You can try them in Delhi.

Consumer Rights : What can be done

So if you are reading this, most probably you or your dear ones are facing some harassment from the shop keeper/service provider. In my family, recently a baby was born. We bought a pram for him and after that a nightmare started with its different parts started falling apart. The shop keeper tried to help initially and we cooperated but when the fix also failed, we wanted our money back. The shop keeper refused. We returned the pram to shop and asked her to keep the money and pram both.
Same night, I logged in to http://core.nic.in. I filed my complaint giving all details of the shop and product and problem. I didn't knew if it will help or not. Next day, I got a call from shopkeeper and she called us to collect our full money "cheque". I don't know why cheque(we paid in cash). If it's a effect of my compliant or the divine intervention we cursed her a lot). You can also try it.
Another channel I have used to log consumer complaint in past is TV Channel CNBC TV "Awaaz". They have a program named PAHREDAR. I had some issues with Airtel Billing and the thing was pending for 3-4 months. I mailed all details at pehredar@moneycontrol.com. The automated reply came same day. Next day I got call from Airtel and everything sorted out same day. My friend tried it and he even got offer to come to studios to detail his problem. Anyway his problem was solved. You can also give a TRY.
